Gravel in the brain.

We've been touting the gravel train for some time here in the Competitive office, but we would be lying if we didn't say we have wondered a little bit about whether or not it would really take off — that is until we saw Pinarello jump on board last year with the Gan GR-S, and with new the Gan GR Disc 105 Complete Bike our hankering for gravel has been validated, giving us another stunning Italian take on an off-road machine. The Gan GR Disc brings new possibilities, and expands horizons, allowing you to take a featherweight feel to new adventures beyond the pavement, with comfort locked in as a top priority.

The geometry of the Gan GR is defined to allow you to stay comfortable on all day epics down poorly graded gravel. The rear utilizes Flexstays technology that create the illusion of slight suspension or soft-tail in the rear end by using wide, flat sections in the chainstays that elevate absorption of vertical chatter, and provide total torsional stiffness for snappy and responsive feel when you commit power to the pedals. The hubs spacing is wide at 12 x 142mm, to give clearance needed for running larger tires on off-road surfaces.

While comfort stays a priority in the front triangle, aerodynamics weren't kicked to the side either, which is of no surprise coming from Pinarello. The Gan GR isn't called out as specifically aerodynamic, but it inherits Pinarello's signature oval-front and flattened-back tube shaping throughout the frame and fork, creating an aerodynamic profile that slices cleanly through the wind without any extra materials bogging down the scale. An integrated seat clamp and aero seat post add to the wind-cutting advantage and offer clean, uninterrupted frame lines. Airfoils, similar to what you find in the Dogma F8, are used on the downtube and top tube, allowing you to glide through the air when you're barreling down country roads and cobbles of the Roubaix.

At first glance you might see a few similarities between the Gan GR and its cousin, the Dogma KS-8, but upon further inspection you'll find an entirely different bike. It omits the elastomer suspension system, and aggressively curved top tube for a much more classic and straightforward design with clean lines that you might find yourself sitting back and tracing in your mind after a long Saturday spent in the saddle ginding gravel. While the Dogma K8-S boasts the top-end of the top-tier Toray T1100 1K Dream Carbon and the Gan S is made of T700 carbon, the Gan GR consists of slightly more compliant T900 carbon, which gains weight and sacrifices a tiny bit of stiffness but drops the overall cost significantly. While this carbon is slightly less rigid than the T1100 1K, it remains a high-strength, race-worthy layup designed to handle hard miles over varied terrain.

This particular build it topped off with cherry-picked components that have both performance, and your wallet's safety in mind. It combines an array of Shimano 105 components for crisp shifting, and reliable Shimano RS505 disc brakes to give you sure stopping power on slippery and muddy roads. The bike rolls ontop of a set of wide Fulcrum Fr007 hoops with lofty 33c tires for a bit of pneumatic suspension, and sure-footed grip when you're sending it into loose and dusty corners.
