The Santa Cruz Stigmata CC Rival complete cyclocross bike may have been born on the 'cross course, but it's more than earned its stripes as one of the most coveted all-road adventure bikes available today. With a massive gear range, powerful brakes, and serious tire clearance, the Stigmata is ready to race 'cross, ride gravel, and even mix it up in your local crit series with little more than a change of tires.

Although it's come to be regarded as one of the most versatile drop bar bikes to date, the Stigmata was born to do battle on a cyclocross race track. That means a few things—namely that it's built to be rugged with plenty of clearance for mud. Following the current trends in 'cross geometry, the Stigmata forgoes the high bottom bracket and relaxed head angle that once defined the genre, in favor of a lower, steeper geometric concept that's found favor in recent years. But in spite of the Stimata's intended use as a 'cross racer, the team at Santa Cruz knew that it would see plenty of use outside of the confines of course tape. To that end, the Stigmata was built to accommodate two full-size bottles in the front triangle—a feature that 'cross purists will argue is unnecessary, but which is invaluable for those taking the Stigmata in a different direction.

The Stigmata has endeared itself to riders of diverse backgrounds in part because the very features that make it such a formidable steed on the 'cross course lend it serious functionality for covering ground on gravel roads, singletrack trails, and in a paceline. Although you might scoff at the idea of the Stigmata replacing a dedicated road bike, it's done precisely that for a growing number of skeptics—including several members of the Competitive family. The finely-tuned flex significantly reduces road chatter, while the massive downtube and chainstays channel your efforts to the back wheel with enthusiastic efficiency. The modern 'cross geometry is quite similar to what you'd find on a World Tour-derived whippet, which keeps the handling quick and nimble. Paired with road tires, it might actually inspire you to go on the attack during Wednesday Night Worlds. But of course, that's only part of the picture.

The tire clearance—up to 40mm with plenty of room for mud—allows gravel and adventure-minded riders the option to run tires far wider than UCI regulations dictate. This extra clearance is practically an invitation to find a new local route that utilizes some forgotten dirt roads. It's also made it an obvious choice for mixed-surface races like Grinduro, where we have firsthand experience testing the Stigmata's mettle, as well as any ride that demands efficiency, all-day comfort, and snappy handling.

The Stigmata is built using Santa Cruz’s top tier CC carbon fiber construction, which has become legendary in the mountain bike world for class-leading durability. By using some of the finest, strongest raw materials available, Santa Cruz is able to make its CC level frames extremely lightweight while maintaining outstanding impact resistance, exceptional stiffness, and just the right amount of finely tuned flex. Of course, balancing these factors requires true mastery of carbon fiber, and the design team at Santa Cruz has proven time and time again that their command of carbon fiber construction is unsurpassed in the bike industry. The result is a frame that will hold up to years of hard riding, will provide a comfortable ride, and will do so at a very competitive weight.

The Rival build of the Stigmata is meant to be reliable and ready for adventure. It starts with a wide-range SRAM Rival drivetrain, which provides the gearing necessary to tackle brutally steep climbs while maintaining the top end required to push hard on fast descents. Braking is handled by SRAM's Rival line as well, while the cockpit is made up primarily of Zipp Service Course items. This version of the Stigmata rolls on a hand-built wheelset comprising DT Swiss 370 hubs laced with DT spokes to WTB Asym i19 rims, shod in Maxxis Rambler tires.
