As much as we would love to have a fully kitted out, top-end rig specifically dedicated to each of our road, cross, and gravel adventuring dreams, that isn't exactly a realistic option for most of our bank accounts. Luckily, the 2017 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon Rival 22 Complete Cyclocross Bike covers all the bases as a multi-strada savant that can easily handle all manner of road, gravel, singletrack, or cyclocross excursion. Dressed up in SRAM's workhorse Rival drivetrain with a road and gravel oriented 50/34 compact chainrings, powerful hydraulic brakes, and versatile Maxxis tires in a washboard-smoothing 40mm width, this bike is ready for whatever surface the day brings your way.
The Stigmata Carbon's modern geometry hits the sweet spot between super-aggressive race rocket and overly calm endurance rig, with a 72 degree head angle, 73.5 degree seat angle (based on 56cm model). Its 69mm bottom bracket drop falls neatly between European 'cross high and road racing low, providing comfortable clearance for unexpected obstacles. Even with its race-inspired naming convention, the Stigmata's geometry allows for versatility beyond the barriers, meaning it's just as confident and composed grinding over gravel back roads or exploring light-duty singletrack. Santa Cruz designs the Stigmata to accept tires up to 41mm in width, allowing you to drop the pressure (especially when running tubeless) for a more comfortable ride through rougher terrain. Conversely, toss on a set of skinny road tires to throw down on the local group ride or noodle through the city on a Sunday social.
The Carbon C features a full carbon fiber frame boasting the same stiffness, durability, and strength as Santa Cruz's top-line Carbon CC frame. It's just made with a slightly less costly carbon fiber that carries a bit more weight and brings a major reduction in overall price. Thru-axles at the front and rear add poise and confidence for better tracking across rutted-out straightaways and gravel-strewn corners. Add in the ability to accept 140 or 160mm discs for a responsive ride that also slows down in a hurry when you need it to, no matter how mucky or wet the conditions. Internal cable routing cleans things up by running the brake and shifting cables through the fork, providing a bit of added cable protection and improved aesthetics over frames with external routing. And for riders worried about future compatibility, the Stigmata's ability to run both mechanical and electronic drivetrains keeps it relevant in today's ever-shifting landscape of technology.
